Frequent roadblocks, redundant inspections, and unnecessary stoppages along the northern corridor have slowed cargo movement from the port of Mombasa to inland destinations. As a result, cargo operators who have been using the port of Mombasa are increasingly shifting their businesses from the northern corridor to Tanzania due to persistent inefficiencies along the transport route. According to the principal secretary in the state department for the East African community, Caroline Karugu, this is making the country increasingly lose its competitive edge as a regional logistics hub.
